PC or a MAC? How about PC and a MAC?

If I were to create a top ten list of most asked questions in my line of duty, "PC or a MAC?" would be in the top three. Interestingly enough my answer has changed over the years. When I first started getting asked this question, my answer was PC then more recently it was MAC. However for a few years now I have been saying you don't have to pick one, you can have both. Of course this is not what Apple or Microsoft wants you to do in fact they try everything in their power to lock you in their Eco system. As the computer prices drop, their intergration into our daily activities, and our dependence on them increase, owning multiple computers becomes a common practice. So why decide on one over another?

New website launched! Here is what it takes...

Yes, yes, and yes again! After a long, and orchestrated process CTU's new website is launched.

I'm very excited about this new and clean look and very thankful to those who sacrificed from their sleep, watching TV, doing laundry, Facebook crawling, and etc. It's a beautiful thing to see the perfect child of our team's labor. It has been extra difficult completing this website since most of our team members have been busy with clients' projects.

True stories of unfortunate data loss

Data loss happensIf you take a moment to reflect on what your computer holds for you everyday, you will make a startling discovery about how much stuff is in there that is either impossible or very difficult to replace. Over the years I have talked with everybody that listened about the importance of backing up their data but in most cases if they haven't lived through a data loss situation they just nodded and moved on. I have not given up though. Today I'm going to talk about easy ways to backup here so hopefully you will start backing up moment you're done reading but one thing I'll do in addition is to give you unfortunate stories of real people to motivate you.

There are so many sad stories of data loss I have encountered over the years but one always stood out. One of our very loyal customers came in one day with an external drive in his hand. He said that his dog knocked it over while it was spinning and he just wants the data out of it.

Computer virus misconceptions

Computer Virus Misconceptions

Back when I started in the IT industry things were different. It was the late 90s and the scene was all about building custom computers and upgrading the older ones. Few virus infections ended up on my bench. Surprisingly though almost every customer had some kind of virus attack story to tell that he heard from someone. Today things are quite different. Virus removal and clean-up is our number one requested service. Close to 70% of computers we work on come infected with something or another. Virus tales got more twisted over the years as well because we now have many different infection types which are called different things. Spyware, malware, trojan, rootkit, and so on. One thing didn't change at all though and that is the scary virus infection stories that people tell. Even though some may find it incorrect but in this article I'm going to call all infections as viruses to keep it simple.

We usually hear two types of stories. It's either about how the virus got inside the computer and the user felt it the moment it happened or how it makes no sense the user's computer got infected (they have the best protection, they don't do anything naughty on the web, and it's just not fair). We hear relatively even number of these two versions of virus infection stories and even if the circumstances differ it's almost always the very similar. My goal here is to give some general information to you so you can be more on the look out for viruses in general.

Where to spend those few advertising dollars

Online Promotions

I have been in business long enough to grow tired of every sales person chasing me around. If you're one of us trying to make ends meet in this economy after getting everybody paid while dealing with well trained pack of wolves (sales people if you didn't guess already), you know how agonizing it is. If you're not one of us, I hope you can sympathize. Just think of the last time you got confused and duped into some kind of an extended warranty or additional coverage with your purchase of headphones or minor car repair. Small business owners have always been at a disadvantage against large national companies with virtually unlimited resources and as if this is not enough, we fight with sales people and sales gimmicks to make good use of those few dollars we have left to promote our services.

As much as word of mouth is the best form of advertising, I believe it's not enough. Especially these days when people trust Internet more then their family members. Once you realize it's a must to get the word out and start looking for the best way to advertise you start dancing with the wolves. When you look for reasons to pick one over the other to, every one of them shows you charts, benchmarks, reviews, testimonials, you name it and they got it.
